This is a real specialism and American television could not function without it. Every procedural needs somebody who walks in, delivers the information that redirects the plot, is believed instantly, and leaves. The part has almost no interiority by design, and the actors hired repeatedly for it are the ones who can suggest a whole working life in a couple of scenes. Whaley did that across a decade and more of shows with nothing else in common.
There is a comic register too. His producer Pete on Frasier is the other side of the same authority, a man whose job is to manage somebody unmanageable. The biography on record is thin, a Culver City high school graduation in 1980 and steady work afterwards, but the credit list is the biography, and it describes a career most working actors would take.

Where to start with Michael Whaley
Of the five titles here, Early Edition serves him best. The show's premise means the police keep running into a man who knows things he should not, so Detective Paul Armstrong gets to be suspicious in an interesting way rather than a procedural way.
Profiler is the darker option and the more conventional one, a mid-1990s serial-killer show with a good cast and a great deal of tinted lighting. CSI: Miami is the highest-profile credit, and a single episode will show you the skill described above executed cleanly. Separate Lives is a 1990s thriller of the sort video shops were full of, and the 2005 television version of The Poseidon Adventure is a disaster remake with a large cast and modest ambitions. Sisters and Frasier, where a lot of viewers actually met him, are not among the credits listed here.
