Morena Baccarin
Morena Baccarin is an actor, born 1979.
Morena Baccarin was born in Rio de Janeiro to an actress mother and a journalist father, moved to New York at seven when her father was transferred there, and went through the theatre programme at Juilliard. Almost none of that showed in the early casting, which for a decade treated her as an exotic beauty and left her to work out the rest herself.
Firefly was the first real chance and she took it sideways. Inara is written as a courtesan and could have been decorative. Baccarin plays her as the most composed person on the ship and the only one whose composure is obviously a defence. Serenity carried that performance to film. Stargate SG-1 and V followed, both casting her as a serene alien with hidden intent, which she was quietly excellent at and which was starting to look like a ceiling.
Homeland broke the ceiling. Jessica Brody is not glamorous, not mysterious and not enjoying herself: she is a woman whose husband came back from a war unrecognisable, and Baccarin played that exhaustion well enough to earn an Emmy nomination. Gotham gave her a rare chance to be plainly warm, the Deadpool films gave her a girlfriend part with actual jokes in it, and Sheriff Country has at last handed her a network series of her own to lead.

Where to start with Morena Baccarin
Firefly first, obviously, and at fourteen episodes the commitment is small. Inara is the best-written part on the show and Baccarin underplays her against a cast that is mostly playing loud. Follow it with Serenity, which finishes the story.
For the range, Homeland is essential: the first two seasons give her a role with no charm to hide behind, and it is the strongest acting on this list. Gotham is comfort viewing with her as the moral centre of a very silly city. Deadpool is the credit most people know her from, and she is funnier in it than the marketing suggested. Greenland is a solid disaster film that works because the marriage inside it is played straight.
Firefly and the genre television
Cast in Firefly a week after the original actress dropped out, and it remains the role fans bring up first. Stargate and V gave her two more genre leads in quick succession.
The prestige drama
Homeland brought an Emmy nomination for playing a wife whose husband has come back from captivity as someone else. It is the most demanding thing on her record.
The Deadpool films
Vanessa is the emotional anchor of a franchise that otherwise refuses to have one, and the role gets progressively stranger across the three films and the recut. She does a great deal with not very much screen time.
The animation voice work
A substantial run in the DC animated films, mostly as Talia al Ghul, plus Black Canary in Justice League Unlimited. This is the body of work almost nobody attributes to her.
