Norm Lewis
Norm Lewis is an actor, born 1963.
Lewis is a stage singer first, and everything on this page is downstream of that. Born in Eatonville, Florida in 1963, he built his career as a baritone across Broadway, the West End, regional theatre and recordings, and the thing people mention before anything else is the width of the range.
The line most often quoted about him is that he was the second African American actor, after Robert Guillaume, to play the title role in Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera, and the first to do it in the Broadway production. He returned to that world in 2023, appearing in the sequel Love Never Dies in the West End. It is a real distinction and also a slightly awkward one, because the milestone tends to get discussed instead of the singing, which is the actual reason he keeps getting cast.
On screen, the concert films are where the voice survives intact. He sang Javert in the Les Miserables twenty-fifth anniversary concert and Caiaphas in the live Jesus Christ Superstar broadcast, two roles that need a big, unforced low end and no theatrical mugging. The acting credits are steadier than they are showy: Edison Davis on Scandal, Eddie in Da 5 Bloods, and smaller parts in Sex and the City 2, Winter's Tale and The Good Mother. He is the rare stage performer who does not oversell a camera.

Where to start with Norm Lewis
Go to Les Misérables: 25th Anniversary in Concert first. His Javert is the clearest recording of what he can do, sung at the size the role wants and without the barking that usually comes with it, and a concert staging strips away everything except the voice.
Pair it with Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert, where Caiaphas asks for the very bottom of his range in front of a live audience with no second take.
For the acting, Da 5 Bloods is the substantial one and the best evidence that he does not need to sing to hold a scene, while Scandal gave him a recurring political figure across a network run. The Good Mother and Sex and the City 2 are the smaller studio credits, Winter's Tale is a curiosity, and Stars in the House is him as himself, which is worth an hour if you like the man.
