Peter Mullan
Peter Mullan is an actor, born 1959.
Peter Mullan spent the first half of the 1990s in other people's films in small hard parts: a labourer for Ken Loach in Riff-Raff, one of the flatmates' problems in Shallow Grave, a veteran in Braveheart, and Swanney the dealer in Trainspotting, a performance of maybe eight minutes that everyone who saw the film remembers. Then My Name Is Joe made him a lead, playing a recovering alcoholic in Glasgow with no self-pity available anywhere in the performance.
He has the hardest face in Scottish cinema and is a much subtler actor than that suggests. The trick is that his men are frightening and tired at the same time, so the violence never reads as a pose. Joseph in Tyrannosaur opens that film doing something unforgivable and spends the rest of it being watched rather than excused, which only works because Mullan refuses to soften him by a single degree.
He directs as well. The Magdalene Sisters, about the Irish laundries, is a furious piece of filmmaking, and Neds followed it. As an actor he has become one of Britain's reliable heavies for large productions: a Death Eater in Harry Potter, a dwarf king in The Rings of Power, a rural crime patriarch in Ozark, a lake-country brute in Top of the Lake. The quality of the material varies wildly. He does not.

Where to start with Peter Mullan
Tyrannosaur is the argument for him as a leading man, and it is a hard 90 minutes: Paddy Considine's first film as a director, two damaged people circling each other, no reassurance offered. If that sounds like too much, My Name Is Joe reaches similar territory with more warmth and a football team.
His famous work is mostly supporting, and it is worth seeing how little he needs. Trainspotting gives him one flat and a dressing gown and he is the most alarming thing in the film. Session 9 is an underseen American horror in which he plays an asbestos foreman losing his grip inside an abandoned asylum, and his voice does most of the work.
On television, Ozark is the mainstream entry and Top of the Lake is the better performance. Then watch The Magdalene Sisters, which he directed, to see what he cares about when the choice is his.
The Scottish films
Where the career is. My Name Is Joe won Best Actor at Cannes and is a recovering alcoholic played with no sentiment at all, and Neds is the one he wrote and directed about a Glasgow boyhood.
The hard dramas
The films that are genuinely difficult to sit through, and he is the reason they work. Tyrannosaur is the hardest, and The Magdalene Sisters is the one he directed and it is furious rather than sad.
The blockbusters and television
The work that funds the rest. Braveheart and the Harry Potter film are the widest-reach credits, and the recent television has him in Ozark and the Rings of Power in much the same register.
