Questlove

Ahmir Thompson has been the drummer and joint frontman of the Roots since long before most people could have picked him out of a line-up, and since 2014 that band has been the house band on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, after doing the same job on Late Night. He has therefore played more hours of television than most working actors.

The through-line in everything else he does is archival obsession. He produced the 2015 cast album of Hamilton, co-founded Okayplayer and OkayAfrica, joined NYU's Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music as an adjunct professor in 2016, and hosted the podcast Questlove Supreme. Different formats, one activity: locating music that got lost and making other people care about it. He holds an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature Film.

On screen he mostly plays Questlove, and appears to know exactly how funny that is. He is himself in Brown Sugar, Someone Great, Popstar and a long shelf of music documentaries, from Bad 25 to the Tribe Called Quest film to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony. The exceptions are voice roles, including Curly in Pixar's Soul, a film about a musician's inner life that benefited from someone who knows what a drummer's hands are actually doing.

The most recent credits point away from performing altogether. He is listed as director on a history of SNL's music and on an Earth, Wind & Fire documentary dated 2026.
