RM

RM is an actor, born 1994.

RM began as Runch Randa, a teenager rapping in the Korean underground hip-hop scene. Born Kim Nam-joon and raised in Ilsan, he joined Big Hit in 2010 and debuted with BTS in June 2013 as the group's leader, a job that in practice meant being its rapper, its main English speaker and its spokesman in every room where the group had to explain itself.

The solo discography runs alongside the group's rather than after it: the mixtapes RM in 2015 and Mono in 2018, then the studio albums Indigo in 2022 and Right Place, Wrong Person in 2024.

His screen credits are entirely documentary. There is no acting anywhere on this page: concert films, backstage tour docs, variety formats, late-night appearances, and archive footage in the documentary series Explained. Taken in order they make a decent record of how a Korean group became a global one, and RM is usually the one holding the microphone when the difficult question arrives. He is also the member most often asked to speak for a project rather than perform in it, which is why the talk-show material is more revealing here than the stage footage.

Where to start with RM

There are two sensible ways in. If you want the story told properly, BTS Monuments: Beyond the Star is the long-form documentary version and Break the Silence: The Movie is where the members talk most candidly about what touring costs.

If you want RM specifically, watch him in the rooms where the language changes. The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and The Late Late Show with James Corden have him handling most of the English and landing the jokes for six other people, which is a strange skill and one he is unusually good at.

The concert record is BTS World Tour: Love Yourself in Seoul. The backstage record is Burn the Stage: The Movie. For the low-stakes version, BTS: Bon Voyage is the travel show, and it exposes personalities faster than any of the polished releases do.
