Ronnie Rowe, credited at times as Ronnie Rowe Jr., is a Canadian actor whose strongest film performance is the title role in Black Cop, the 2017 feature that won him the Vancouver Film Critics Circle award for best actor in a Canadian film. That picture is not among the credits listed here, which is a shame, because it is the one that shows what he can carry alone.
What these credits do show is the working half of a Canadian screen career: small parts as officers and agents in American productions such as A Simple Favor and The Man from Toronto, plus voice work on the animated series Daniel Spellbound.
The substantial one is Star Trek: Discovery, where he played Bryce, the communications officer, through the bridge crew's long run. Ensemble Star Trek is a peculiar acting job. Bridge officers exist largely to make the ship feel inhabited, and most of the work is reacting on camera to something the audience is looking at instead of you. Rowe registers anyway, mainly by playing competence rather than awe, and the series eventually rewarded him with a promotion and a little more to do. The Man from Toronto and A Simple Favor are small parts in films you would watch for other reasons entirely, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise. The Madness is the most recent of the television credits here. Daniel Spellbound is voice work aimed at a younger audience, and Maps and Mistletoe is precisely what its title promises. If you want the performance the award was for, go looking for Black Cop, which is not among the credits listed here.
