Rosamund Pike
Rosamund Pike is an actor, born 1979.
Pike was cast in a Bond film early, as Miranda Frost in Die Another Day, and spent the decade that followed in roles trading on the same surface: Jane Bennet in Pride & Prejudice, a supporting part in An Education, a run of composed, well-bred Englishwomen in period drama and studio thrillers such as Fracture, Jack Reacher and Wrath of the Titans. She was good in all of them and they asked her for very little.
Gone Girl is where the surface became the point. As Amy Dunne she plays composure as a weapon: the voice never rises, the diction stays immaculate, and the content underneath goes somewhere the manner flatly refuses to acknowledge. It brought an Academy Award nomination and it retroactively reframed everything she had done before.
She has been running variations ever since, most cleanly in I Care a Lot, where a professional guardian smiles her way through elder fraud, and in Saltburn, where she is very funny as a rich woman with no discernible interior life. Between those she took the harder assignments too: a war correspondent in A Private War, Marie Curie in Radioactive, a frontier survivor in Hostiles, and Moiraine in The Wheel of Time.
Her accolades now include a Primetime Emmy, a Golden Globe and a Laurence Olivier Award, alongside the Oscar nomination and two BAFTA nominations. That is a stranger and more interesting shelf than the Bond opening suggested, and the pattern in it is clear: she is at her best playing women whose politeness is doing something other than being polite.

Where to start with Rosamund Pike
Gone Girl is the obvious entry and the correct one. Pike does most of it with her voice held perfectly level, and the performance is why the film works rather than the other way round.
Follow it with I Care a Lot, which is the same instrument turned on a smaller, meaner target, and then Saltburn, where she steals a film she is barely in by refusing to give the character one moment of self-awareness.
For the dramatic actor, A Private War is the one to watch: unglamorous, physically committed, nothing like the roles that made her famous. Pride & Prejudice and An Education are the early English years, Die Another Day is where the industry first noticed, and The Wheel of Time is the fantasy lead if you want the long form. The World's End proves she can be funny.
The cold performances
The register she owns: composure used as a weapon. Amy in Gone Girl is the definitive version and reframed the entire career, and I Care a Lot pushes exactly the same quality into comedy without softening it.
The dramatic work
The biographical and historical parts, several of them real women. A Private War gives her the reporter Marie Colvin and is the best acting she has done, and Radioactive is Marie Curie played without any reverence.
The early and genre work
The decade before Gone Girl, mostly using the poise and little else. An Education is the exception and shows the comic timing, and The Wheel of Time is the recent fantasy lead that she also produces.
