Ryan Hurst

Ryan Hurst is an actor, born 1976.

Ryan Hurst is a very large man, and the interesting thing about his career is how often that size gets used for gentleness rather than threat. Remember the Titans cast him as Gerry Bertier, the team captain whose friendship carries the film's whole argument, and the performance works because Hurst plays a bruiser as somebody thinking.

Sons of Anarchy built the audience. Opie Winston is the club's conscience and its most damaged member, and Hurst plays him mostly through stillness, letting the beard and the pauses do work other actors would fill with dialogue. It remains the role people quote at him.

Since then he has specialised in men whose calm reads as a warning: Beta, the masked giant in The Walking Dead, performed as pure ritual; Chick Hogan in Bates Motel, frightening in ordinary clothes; Lil' Foster in Outsiders, a mountain-clan drama that deserved longer than it got. He also voiced Thor in the 2022 game God of War Ragnarok, a version of the character built out of bitterness and drink rather than heroism, and received a BAFTA nomination for it. The game is not among the credits listed here.

The character work goes back further than most people realise, through Patch Adams, The Postman and We Were Soldiers as Sergeant Ernie Savage, and continues in voice roles like Jedidiah in Rango and Lobo in Superman: Man of Tomorrow. He plays Mentor in the 2026 film The Odyssey.

Where to start with Ryan Hurst

The reason to be here is Sons of Anarchy. Opie is the moral centre of a show that keeps testing what that costs him, and Hurst plays it almost entirely through silence, which in a series this loud is a real decision.

Remember the Titans is the other essential, and it works because Gerry Bertier is written as a leader first and a friend second.

For the range: The Walking Dead gives him Beta, a masked giant played as ritual rather than menace; Bates Motel lets him be quietly alarming in normal clothes; Outsiders is the underrated one. We Were Soldiers is the best of the early war work, and Rango proves he can be funny with nothing but a voice. His Thor in God of War Ragnarok is the performance most people now cite, and it is not among the credits shown here.

The television roles

Opie is the reason people know the name, and what happens to that character is the show's most-discussed turn. Beta in The Walking Dead is the opposite casting: enormous, masked and entirely without warmth.

The war and sports films

Gerry Bertier in Remember the Titans is the early role and still the most widely seen, and the film asks him to play a man whose whole identity is physical. We Were Soldiers is the best made of these.

The later films

The independent work since Sons of Anarchy, plus the voice roles. Desperation Road is the recent lead worth finding, and Rango is much the best-looking animated film he has been in.
