Samantha Sloyan
Samantha Sloyan is an actor, born 1979.
Sloyan grew up in the business, the daughter of actors James Sloyan and Deirdre Lenihan, and spent years doing the recurring-guest work that keeps Los Angeles actors employed, including runs on Scandal and on the twelfth season of Grey's Anatomy. Neither of those is among the credits listed here.
Her career turned on one director. Mike Flanagan cast her as Sarah in Hush (2016) and then kept casting her: Leigh Crain in The Haunting of Hill House, Bev Keane in Midnight Mass, Shasta in The Midnight Club, Tamerlane Usher in The Fall of the House of Usher. Five collaborations is a repertory relationship, not a run of luck.
Bev Keane is the role that made her name, and it is a precise, difficult piece of acting. Bev is a church volunteer whose certainty is the horror: no fangs, no snarl, just a woman who has decided God agrees with her and who stays unfailingly polite about it. Sloyan plays conviction rather than malice, which is exactly why the character is unbearable in the right way.
Outside the Flanagan orbit there is Victoria Seaver on SEAL Team, Jolene Spivey on Helstrom, Miss Rohrbacher in The Life of Chuck (2025) and Lily Bradley on The Pitt (2025), with an untitled Exorcist film listed for 2027.

Where to start with Samantha Sloyan
Watch Midnight Mass first, and watch it for Bev Keane. She is the most memorable thing in a series full of memorable things, and the performance never once asks you to enjoy her company.
Hush is the lean, efficient beginning of the whole partnership, a home-invasion thriller built around silence, and her part in it is small and load-bearing.
The Haunting of Hill House is the best series of the group and gives her a colder, sadder register. The Fall of the House of Usher hands her a full gothic monster and lets her play it enormous. The Midnight Club is the slightest of the five.
Away from the horror, The Life of Chuck and The Pitt show what she does with ordinary people, and it is a great deal.
