Samara Weaving
Samara Weaving is an actor, born 1992.
Born in Adelaide in 1992, Samara Weaving did the standard Australian apprenticeship: the series Out of the Blue in 2008, then four years as Indi Walker on Home and Away from 2009, which brought an AACTA Award nomination. Soap opera is a strange training ground and a very effective one, because it forces an actor to play sincerity at speed.
She then walked directly into horror comedy and found the thing she is best at. A recurring role in the first season of Ash vs Evil Dead in 2015, the antagonist of the Australian thriller Bad Girl in 2016, Bee in The Babysitter in 2017, and then Grace in Ready or Not, which is the performance everything else gets measured against. The specific skill is holding terror and comic timing in the same take: her characters get funnier as their situations get worse, and the comedy never undercuts the fear. Grace spends a whole film in a wedding dress that is progressively destroyed, and Weaving plays the deterioration as a rising, exhausted competence rather than as hysteria.
Since then she has moved between the genre lane and studio work: Nix in Guns Akimbo, Melanie Cross in Mayhem, Scarlett in Snake Eyes, Laura Crane in Scream VI, Thea in Bill & Ted Face the Music, Olivia Allan in The Valet, Jessica in Nine Perfect Strangers, and a small early part as Penelope in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. She returns as Grace in Ready or Not: Here I Come.
