Sayaka Ohara
Sayaka Ohara is an actor, born 1975.
Ohara has one of the most useful voices in Japanese animation: a full adult register in an industry that mostly wants teenagers, which is why she has spent twenty-five years being cast as the mother, the captain, the elder or the threat, and often several of those in the same season.
The signature role is Erza Scarlet in Fairy Tail, carried through the television series and out into the films Phoenix Priestess and Dragon Cry. It is the loudest thing she does. The more interesting work is quieter and stranger: Yuko Ichihara in xxxHOLiC, all smoke and amusement; Milly Ashford in Code Geass; Irisviel in Fate/Zero; Ozen across the Made in Abyss series and its films, a performance built almost entirely on unsettling calm.
The mother roles are a category of their own and she is the best in the business at them, from Yasuko in Toradora! to Masaki Kurosaki in a Bleach film to a role in Your Name. She played Michiru Kaiou in the Sailor Moon Eternal films, Mari Kurihara in Prison School, Captain Kobayashi in Knights of Sidonia, and Elsie Crimson in Edens Zero.
Affiliated with the Haikyo agency, she also works in video games, dubs foreign live-action into Japanese, and hosts radio. That breadth is the norm for a working seiyuu, and the volume here is unusual even by that standard.

Where to start with Sayaka Ohara
xxxHOLiC is the best introduction. Yuko is a role that lives entirely in tone, teasing one moment and ancient the next, and Ohara controls the shift so precisely that the show would not work with anyone else in the booth.
For the opposite end, Made in Abyss is essential. Ozen is a genuinely frightening creation and almost none of that comes from volume; it is pace and flatness doing the work.
Fairy Tail is the long-running crowd favourite and the role most fans arrive by, years of Erza. Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion and Fate/Zero are the two to pick if you want to hear the same actor be sunny in one and tragic in the other, back to back.
Toradora! is the warmest thing here, and EDENS ZERO and Prison School show how far she can push the imperious mode.
The mothers and mentors
The register she is cast in most often, and she plays it with a warmth that never tips into sentiment. Usagi Drop and Anohana both use her to hold an entire emotional structure together from the edge of the frame.
The action leads
Erza Scarlet in Fairy Tail is the longest-running role of her career and the one with the largest following, a swordswoman played with absolute conviction across more than three hundred episodes and several films.
The elegant and dangerous ones
Where the voice turns cold. Yuko in xxxHolic trades in wishes and never quite tells you the price, and Ozen in Made in Abyss is one of the most genuinely alarming characters in modern anime.
The prestige series
The large, expensive productions that hire her for authority. Fate/Zero and Code Geass are the two most people arrive through, and Vivy is the recent one worth the time.
