Steven Cree

Steven Cree is a Scottish actor who worked film, television and theatre in roughly equal measure through his twenties, and the early screen credits are the sort that fit on one line: a Scot called Scotty in 4.3.2.1, a detective constable in the tower-block siege thriller Tower Block, a sergeant in the 2011 ghost story The Awakening. Two 2014 blockbusters billed him almost as a joke at his own expense. In Maleficent he is the Overseer. In 300: Rise of an Empire he is credited as a decapitated Greek marine.

Outlander changed the arithmetic. Ian Murray, from 2014, gave him a character with a family, a history and years of screen time to fill out, which is a thing supporting actors rarely get. What he does with it is the thing he does everywhere: he plays reliability. Look down the credit list and it is soldiers, officers and men with jobs, Captain Stagg in Churchill, Major Timothy Pike in The Titan, Sir Christopher Seton in Outlaw King, Rigby in Terminator: Dark Fate, Stuart Collier in COBRA. Cree is very good at the man in the room who is not the problem, which sounds like faint praise and is not, because that part collapses instantly if the actor pushes.

The exceptions are worth hunting for. Gallowglass in A Discovery of Witches lets him swagger. He voiced a spaceship's artificial intelligence in 2036 Origin Unknown, and one of Merida's hopeless suitors in Brave. Since 2022 he has worked steadily in small horror and drama features, The Twin, Martyrs Lane, Bagman, I Swear, while still turning up in studio pictures such as Heads of State.
