Susan Cooper read English at Oxford under Tolkien and Lewis, worked as a Fleet Street reporter for the Sunday Times, and wrote The Dark Is Rising sequence after moving to America, which is probably why the English landscape in it is so exactly observed. The second book is the one people press on each other: a boy turning eleven at midwinter and discovering what he is. She won the Newbery for the fourth.

Where to start with Susan Cooper
The Dark Is Rising is the essential one and works alone, even though it is second in the sequence. Over Sea, Under Stone (The Dark Is Rising #1) is first and is a more conventional children's adventure. Greenwitch (The Dark Is Rising #3) brings the two casts together. Seaward is the standalone and the strangest, and The Boggart and the monster is the later comic one.
