Suzy
Suzy is an actor, born 1994.
Bae Su-ji was in the girl group Miss A from 2010 to 2017 and was acting almost immediately alongside it, debuting in the 2011 series Dream High and then in the film Architecture 101 in 2012. That film did the lasting damage: its success got her labelled the "Nation's First Love" by the Korean press, a nickname that has followed her ever since and has probably cost her about as much as it gave.
What she is good at is playing the object of somebody else's story while quietly refusing to be only that. Gu Family Book, Uncontrollably Fond and While You Were Sleeping are all built around her being adored, and the performances underneath keep locating a harder, more practical person than the writing asks for. In 2017 she released the extended play Yes? No? and became a solo recording artist as well.
The last stretch is the more interesting one. Vagabond put her in a full action series as Go Hae-ri, Start-Up made her a founder rather than a love interest, Anna handed her a role built on a borrowed identity instead of sweetness, and Doona! and Wonderland took her into colder, stranger material. Where to start with Suzy
The career runs between two poles, more than a decade apart. Start with Architecture 101, which still holds up: a first-love film that is unusually unsentimental about how badly young people handle each other. Watch it to understand why the nickname stuck, then watch Start-Up to see her working against it, running a founder plot with real spikiness.
Vagabond is the big-budget one, a conspiracy action series that is more fun than good and gives her the most physical work here. Anna is the best acting: a limited series about class and identity where she has to keep a story straight, and she is genuinely unnerving in it. Doona! is the melancholy option, an ex-idol romance close enough to her own life to be uncomfortable. Skip Real, a small part in a film with much larger problems.
