Tara Strong

Tara Strong is an actor, born 1973.

Two of the most recognisable boy heroes in American cartoons, Timmy Turner and Ben Tennyson, are voiced by a woman from Toronto. That is the quickest way to describe Tara Strong's career, though it undersells the volume. Her animation credits include The Powerpuff Girls, The Fairly OddParents, My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, Teen Titans, Xiaolin Showdown, Ben 10, Drawn Together, The New Batman Adventures, Rugrats, The Proud Family, Chowder and Unikitty.

Her range is unusual even by voice acting standards because the extremes are so far apart. Bubbles on The Powerpuff Girls is pitched somewhere near helium. Raven on Teen Titans is a flat, dry mutter delivered from behind a hood. They come from the same throat, in the same era, and Strong can hold a scene playing both sides of a conversation without either voice bending toward the other.

She has also become one of the defining voices of DC animation, playing Batgirl across multiple films, and she carries an enormous games career, including Mortal Kombat X, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Jak and Daxter, Blue Dragon, the Batman: Arkham series and Rikku in Final Fantasy X and X-2.

The best recent example of what she does is Miss Minutes in Loki: a chirpy animated clock with a Southern accent, deployed as the most quietly unsettling presence in a live action Marvel series. The sweetness is the weapon.

Where to start with Tara Strong

The Powerpuff Girls and Teen Titans make the ideal double bill, because watching them back to back is the fastest way to understand that the two voices belong to one person. Raven is the better performance; Bubbles is the harder trick.

The Fairly OddParents is the long haul role, a decade of playing a ten year old boy without ever making it cloying, and Ben 10 is the same skill in an action register.

If you came from fandom, My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic is the one that built it, and Twilight Sparkle is a genuinely well acted anxious overachiever. Loki is the crossover work worth catching. And Samurai Jack gives her Ashi, the closest thing to a dramatic lead she has been handed on television.

The nineties and 2000s cartoons

The run that made her, and Bubbles, Timmy Turner and Raven are three completely different instruments. Teen Titans is the best written of them, and Drawn Together is the one where the same voices get pointed at something obscene.

The DC animated work

Harley Quinn is the role she took over from Arleen Sorkin and has now played longer than anyone. The Killing Joke is the most controversial thing on this list, and Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker is the better film by some way.

The recent and adult work

The later career, where she turns up in things aimed at adults. Gravity Falls and Rick and Morty are the best made, and Loki is the one most viewers will not have spotted her in at all.
