Topher Grace
Topher Grace is an actor, born 1978.
Topher Grace played Eric Forman on That '70s Show from 1998 to 2005, eight seasons as the sitcom straight man, and he was doing serious film work almost immediately alongside it. Traffic came in 2000, Mona Lisa Smile in 2003, and In Good Company in 2004, which remains the clearest early demonstration of what he does well.
That thing is a specific kind of male insecurity. Grace is very good at playing men whose confidence is a thin coat of paint, and who know it, and who keep talking anyway. It makes him funny in comedies and quietly excruciating in dramas. The studio system read this as leading-man material and tried him at scale, which produced Win a Date with Tad Hamilton! and, most notoriously, Eddie Brock in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 in 2007. That role has become shorthand for miscasting, and fairly: the film wants a physical threat and Grace can only give it a resentful colleague.
The recovery has been one of the better second acts of his generation, and it came from playing worse people. Edwin in Predators is a genuinely nasty piece of work. David Duke in BlacKkKlansman is played with total mildness, no theatrics, which is what makes it land. Elder Kennedy in Heretic uses the boyish decency against him. He has also gone back to the beginning, reprising Eric Forman on That '90s Show, and headlined the ABC sitcom Home Economics from 2021 to 2023.

Where to start with Topher Grace
Watch BlacKkKlansman before anything else. Grace plays David Duke as an affable, mannerly man with excellent phone etiquette, and refusing to signal the monstrousness is exactly why the performance works.
Then In Good Company, the film that best fits his early register: an overpromoted young executive whose bravado keeps collapsing. Traffic is the other serious early credit, a small role in a big ensemble and a useful corrective to the sitcom image.
That '70s Show is worth revisiting for how much heavy lifting he does as the least showy person in the cast. For the later, meaner Grace, take Predators and Heretic, both of which weaponise how harmless he looks. Interstellar is a footnote. Spider-Man 3 is the famous misfire and you should see it, if only to understand how much of the blame belongs to the script rather than to him.
The dramatic work
Traffic came first and BlacKkKlansman is the best of it: a David Duke played with total blandness, which is much harder and much more disturbing than a caricature. The rest are the serious parts he keeps quietly taking.
The sitcom and the comic timing
Eight years as Eric Forman gave him a timing that everything else in the career borrows from. In Good Company is the underrated one, a corporate comedy that is really about failing upward and then failing anyway.
The genre and the blockbusters
Spider-Man 3 was meant to be the launch and became the cautionary tale instead, which is unfair to the performance. Heretic is the recent proof that he is very good at playing a decent man being comprehensively outmatched.
