Daytime gave her the reps. Vanessa Ray played Teri Ciccone on As the World Turns from 2006 to 2010, which is the schedule that teaches an actor to hit a mark, learn pages overnight and stay in character opposite people who are also learning pages overnight. Prime-time recurring work followed quickly: Damages in 2010, then Jenny Griffith on Suits across 2011 and 2012, parts written to complicate somebody else's life.
Pretty Little Liars was the break. Cast as CeCe Drake, she was folded into the show's long central mystery and stayed with it through 2017, picking up a Teen Choice Award along the way. The role asked for a very particular skill, playing a character whose meaning keeps being rewritten by the plot without letting the performance turn into a shrug.
Since 2013 the steady job has been Blue Bloods, where she played Officer Eddie Janko until 2024. Eleven years inside a network procedural is the least glamorous achievement in acting and one of the hardest: the writing varies, the schedule does not, and the audience notices immediately if the character drifts. The film credits are thin by comparison, a brief appearance in Frances Ha, a supporting turn in the found-footage horror Devil's Due, the small indie The Last Day of August. Television is where this career actually lives.

Where to start with Vanessa Ray
Blue Bloods is the reasonable entry point, because a decade inside a procedural is where you see what an actor can build out of repetition, and Eddie Janko gets more to work with as the show goes on.
Pretty Little Liars is the flashier credit and the one that made her name, though it asks her to serve a plot machine at least as often as a character. Suits catches her before either of those, in a small role that exists to make life difficult for the leads.
The film work is slight and you can treat it as optional. Frances Ha is a very good movie in which she appears briefly, Devil's Due is competent found-footage horror and nothing more, and Bored to Death is the one that shows her comic register when a script is genuinely funny.
