W. E. B. Du Bois was the first African American to earn a Harvard doctorate, co-founded the NAACP, edited its magazine for twenty-four years, and spent seventy years arguing that the colour line was the defining problem of the century. He wrote sociology, history, novels and autobiography, and moved to Ghana at ninety-three. The Souls of Black Folk is the book everyone reads.

Where to start with W. E. B. Du Bois
The catalogue is missing The Souls of Black Folk, which is the essential one and where anyone should start. Black reconstruction in America 1860-1880 is here and is the major historical work, a rewriting of Reconstruction that the profession took forty years to accept. John Brown is the 1909 biography, and Freedom Road is a Howard Fast novel he introduced.
