Warren Frost

Warren Frost is an actor, born 1925.

Theatre was the job; screen work was what happened around it. Warren Frost, born in Vermont in 1925, spent most of his working life on stage and took film and television parts sporadically from 1958, which is why these credits are scattered across four decades rather than stacked into one.

The part that outlived the rest arrived through his family. His son Mark Frost co-created Twin Peaks, and Warren played Doctor Will Hayward, the town physician who signs the paperwork and keeps the confidences, the one adult in the series whose decency is never set up as a joke. It is a supporting role in a show full of them, and it is the one people remember him for.

Everywhere else he did what stage actors of his generation did on camera: authority figures holding a clipboard. He is Doctor Leo Richmond in Psycho IV: The Beginning, one of the two voices on the radio talk show that frames the film, listening rather than performing. He is the doctor George Richardson in the 1994 miniseries The Stand, and Billy Lewis on Matlock. On Seinfeld he had a role a great many people can still quote, though that series is not among the credits listed here. He died in 2017.

Where to start with Warren Frost

Twin Peaks is the only honest starting point, and Doctor Hayward is a good way into it. While the series is busy being strange, he is the man holding an ordinary town together, and Frost plays him with a plainness that makes everything odd around him land harder.

After that, Psycho IV: The Beginning is the most interesting of the leftovers. He spends the film on the receiving end of a long confession, reacting rather than driving, which is exactly the skill a career in theatre gives you. The Stand hands him another doctor inside a miniseries with other priorities. Matlock is completism, though it is a fair reminder of how much of his working life was single episodes of other people's shows.
