Wataru Takagi

Wataru Takagi is an actor, born 1966.

More than two hundred credits in this catalogue alone. Wataru Takagi, born in Kimitsu, Chiba in 1966 and affiliated with Arts Vision, is one of those Japanese voice actors whose filmography stops being a list and becomes a weather system. Detective Conan, a series running since 1996, has him as Genta Kojima, and the shelf of Detective Conan feature films attached to it accounts for well over a dozen of his entries here on its own.

The range is the point, and it is easiest to see at the extremes. He is the official Japanese voice of Daffy Duck. He is also Zeus in Record of Ragnarok. Between a cartoon duck and the king of the gods there is not much left for a voice to be asked to do, and he has been asked most of it: Okuyasu Nijimura in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Masaru Aoki in Fighting Spirit, Chaka in Black Lagoon, Crimson Rubeus in Sailor Moon, a part in Great Teacher Onizuka, plus work in One Piece, Bleach, Naruto, After War Gundam X, Slayers Try, Beast Wars, GeGeGe no Kitaro and Yes! PreCure 5.

His speciality is the loud, thick-throated comic character who can turn dangerous without a gear change, which is why he keeps getting cast as both sidekicks and heavies. Newer work has not slowed down: Pilar in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners in 2022, the Joker in Batman Ninja, Chudelkin in Sword Art Online, Pelna Khara in Kingsglaive. He has been doing this for more than thirty years and shows no sign of thinning out.

Where to start with Wataru Takagi

Okuyasu in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is the showcase. It is a comic sidekick part that has to turn frightening on demand, and Takagi never softens either half of it, which is much harder than the finished result sounds.

Fighting Spirit is the other essential, because a long-running sports series lives on how precisely the shouting is calibrated, and Masaru Aoki is his best comic creation. Detective Conan is the long-haul commitment, decades of Genta Kojima, and the films are a reasonable way in if the episode count frightens you.

For the heavy register, Black Lagoon gives him Chaka, and Record of Ragnarok hands him Zeus in a show with no interest in subtlety. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is the most recent thing worth your time by a distance. Batman Ninja is the curiosity: he voices the Joker, in Japanese, in a Batman anime.

The comic leads

Onizuka in Great Teacher Onizuka is the signature role, a former gang member who becomes a teacher for entirely the wrong reasons and is unexpectedly good at it.

The long-running series

Genta in Detective Conan has run since 1996, which is close to thirty years of the same child character, and the One Piece and Bleach credits are similarly durable.

The recent work

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and Record of Ragnarok are the two with the widest current reach, and JoJo gives him Okuyasu, who is the sweetest character in that entire franchise.
