Will Patton
Will Patton is an actor, born 1954.
Patton's first years on film were full of small hard parts for interesting directors, Silkwood, After Hours and Desperately Seeking Susan inside three years, before Hollywood worked out what to do with him. What it decided was: sweat. For twenty years he was the man at the elbow of the plot. Scott Pritchard in No Way Out, Chick in Armageddon, Atley Jackson in Gone in Sixty Seconds, Quentin Glass in The Punisher, all of them vibrating slightly.
He is very good at panic held just under the surface, and the voice does most of it, a Carolina rasp that thins out the moment a character starts lying. Give him a decent man and the same equipment produces something entirely different: Coach Yoast in Remember the Titans is a study of a proud man being asked to step aside, and Patton plays the pride rather than the lesson.
The best stretch is the recent one. Kelly Reichardt used him twice, in Wendy and Lucy and as Soloman Tetherow in Meek's Cutoff, where the sweat becomes a wagon train's fatal confidence. American Honey and Minari gave him two more small strange men. Silo made him a deputy worth caring about, the Halloween sequels gave him a town to survive, and Train Dreams handed him an entire film in voiceover, which is the correct use of that voice.

Where to start with Will Patton
Remember the Titans is the easiest door, and not a soft one: Coach Yoast has to lose an argument in nearly every scene and keep his dignity, which is harder than the speeches everyone remembers.
For the actor rather than the crowd pleaser, go to Kelly Reichardt. Meek's Cutoff gives him a frontier husband whose certainty curdles into guesswork, and Wendy and Lucy gives him ten minutes as a mechanic delivering bad news kindly. Minari is the warmest thing he has done. Then take the studio side seriously too, because Armageddon and Gone in Sixty Seconds are exactly the sort of loud films that character actors carry without credit, and he is why both have a pulse in their quieter scenes. Halloween and Silo are the recent horror and television lane, and both use his knack for making procedural dialogue sound like a man talking himself down.
