Zach McGowan
Zach McGowan is an actor, born 1980.
Charles Vane is the performance. Black Sails handed Zach McGowan a pirate captain who is not charming, not witty and not remotely interested in being liked, and McGowan played him as a man permanently one bad decision away from ruin who keeps making the decision anyway. It is a genuinely good piece of television acting, and it sits in the middle of a filmography that mostly does not ask for one.
The problem, if it is a problem, is the face. McGowan looks like a specific thing, and casting has never stopped asking him for it: Anton Ivanov in Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Roan in The 100, Jody in Shameless, Dogknott in The Boys and Gen V, and a long run of direct-to-video action pictures where he is the biggest name on the poster. Scorpion King: Book of Souls, Death Race: Beyond Anarchy, Robert the Bruce, Compulsion. Several of those pay the mortgage rather than the reputation.
He is better than that tier whenever the writing turns up. The Brawler casts him as the boxer Chuck Wepner and asks for something other than menace. Project Blue Book put him inside a period ensemble. He came up on the New York stage, and you can hear it in how much he gets out of the low end of his voice before he ever raises it.

Where to start with Zach McGowan
Black Sails, and it is not a difficult call. Start at the first season and be patient, because the show takes a while to work out that Vane is its most interesting character. Once it does, McGowan gets an arc no other credit here comes close to.
The 100 is the next stop, where Roan is a similar figure written with less nuance and plenty of presence. Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. hands him a straightforward villain, and Shameless is the earliest evidence that he could play something other than intimidating. The Brawler is the one to seek out if you want him stretching, a real boxer with a wounded streak under the size. Dracula Untold is the guilty pleasure. The direct-to-video shelf is for fans only, and he would probably tell you the same.
