Zoe Saldaña is an actor, born 1978.

Zoe Saldana spent her first decade in other people's films: a dance student in Center Stage, supporting turns in Crossroads and Drumline, one scene as Anamaria in the first Pirates of the Caribbean, a small part in The Terminal. Nothing in that stretch predicted what followed, which is that she became the highest-grossing lead actor in history by taking three roles that all require her to disappear.

Neytiri in Avatar is performance capture. Gamora in the Guardians of the Galaxy films is hours in a make-up chair. Uhura in the rebooted Star Trek is the most conventional of the three and still mostly asks her to carry exposition on a bridge full of shouting men. What she does inside those constraints rewards close attention. Gamora is played dry and faintly bored by everyone around her, which is the only reason that team of loud men is funny at all, and Neytiri holds the emotional weight of two enormous films through an interface that flattens most actors into pixels.

Emilia Perez, in 2024, finally handed her a face. Rita is a lawyer with real moral confusion in her, and the role won Saldana the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress along with a BAFTA, a Golden Globe and a prize at Cannes. Time magazine has twice named her one of its hundred most influential people. Four of the highest-grossing films ever made have her in them, and the interesting thing is that almost nobody could pick her out of a line-up of her own characters.

Where to start with Zoe Saldaña

Emilia Pérez is the argument for her as an actor rather than a franchise fixture, so watch that first: it is the rare part that lets her be compromised, tired and funny in the same scene. Then double back to Guardians of the Galaxy, the best written of her blockbuster roles and the one where the deadpan does most of the comic lifting.

Avatar is worth the time if you have never seen it on a decent screen, and Avatar: The Way of Water is the better performance of the two. Star Trek is the weakest of her three franchises for her specifically, though Star Trek Beyond gives Uhura more to do. For the small-scale version, Out of the Furnace has her in a plain, unglamorous register almost nothing else in her filmography uses.

Avatar, Guardians and Star Trek simultaneously, which is a record nobody else holds, and all three require acting through prosthetics, capture or both. Guardians gives the comic timing room, and The Way of Water is where the emotional writing finally catches up with the technology.

Before the franchises absorbed her she was headlining her own thrillers, and they are better than their reputations. Colombiana is the purest version, The Losers is the ensemble one, and Vantage Point is the twisty studio thriller of its moment.
