Choose Your Own Adventure didn't just publish books, it handed the steering wheel to the reader. Launched in the late 1970s, the series put 'you' in the second person at the center of each story and let your page-flipping decisions branch toward dozens of endings, many of them fatal. The range is the point. Deadwood City (1978) and The Mystery of Chimney Rock are early entries that set the template, while titles like You Are a Shark, Prisoner of the Ant People and The Abominable Snowman swing through horror, science fiction and globe-trotting adventure. The writing is functional rather than literary, but the form was genuinely radical for young readers and a clear ancestor of interactive fiction and branching video-game narratives. Few children's series have aged into such obvious influence.
