This is the books-only core of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Jeff Kinney's wildly popular series of illustrated middle-school diaries. Told in the put-upon voice of Greg Heffley and broken up by simple cartoon drawings, the books mine everyday adolescent embarrassment for comedy: summer boredom in Dog Days, the scramble for a Valentine's dance date in The Third Wheel, and birthday chaos in Party Pooper.
The appeal is voice and format. Greg is self-serving, frequently wrong, and rarely learns his lesson, which is exactly why kids who resist denser novels tear through these. The Do-It-Yourself Book hands the journal over to the reader. It is a tightly scoped, hugely readable comedy series built on small humiliations rather than big plots.
