Planet of the Apes began in 1968 with one of science fiction cinema's most famous premises: an astronaut crash-lands on a world where intelligent apes rule and humans are the hunted. That original film and its run of sequels through the early 1970s used the upside-down hierarchy as a mirror, turning pulpy adventure into pointed commentary on race, war, and human arrogance.
The sequels traced a grim downward spiral, from the buried secret of Beneath through the time-loop fatalism of Escape and Conquest to the muted truce of Battle. Decades later the property was reborn around the ape leader Caesar, and 2024's Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes carries that newer line forward, picking up generations after his reign with apes now the dominant species.
The series spans mostly film, with a 2017 game extending the rebooted timeline. The throughline across every entry is the same uneasy question: which species actually deserves the planet.
