The Sims
The Sims took the unglamorous machinery of daily life, careers, relationships, bladder meters and home decor, and turned it into the best-selling PC franchise of its era. Will Wright's digital dollhouse handed players a god's-eye view of little autonomous people and let them nurture or torment them at will, and the absence of a win condition was precisely the point.
Its history is one of relentless expansion, literally. Each numbered entry, from the original through The Sims 2 and 3, spawned a long tail of packs adding pets, seasons, universities and vacations. Spin-offs pushed the formula onto consoles and phones with The Urbz, MySims and FreePlay, and into fantasy with The Sims Medieval. Across all of it the draw is the same quietly compulsive loop: build a life, then watch what it does without you.
The The Sims franchise spans 26 games in the CrossBinge catalog.
