Banjo Kazooie: N n B (2008)

Banjo Kazooie: N n B is a 2008 action video game made by Rare.

Nuts and Bolts takes Banjo and Kazooie in a direction almost nobody expected: vehicle building. The game centres on constructing and racing custom vehicles using a vast library of parts, competing in challenges set by the game's artificial overseer LOG across worlds both new and revisited. Traditional platforming is largely replaced by driving, flying, and boating in vehicles you design. The approach divided fans of the original games, but on its own terms the vehicle construction and challenge variety offer a system with genuine depth.

A few thoughts on Banjo Kazooie: N n B

Nuts and Bolts is a vehicle construction game wearing a Banjo-Kazooie costume, and it works better than it has any right to. The parts library is vast, the physics are consistent enough to reward deliberate engineering, and the challenge variety keeps the system from going stale. Rare knew the audience expected platforming and gave them something else entirely, which is why the game spent years being resented before people came back to appreciate what it actually does. Taken on its own terms, it is a genuinely inventive game about building things, breaking them, and building them better.

Platform mascots still working long after their heyday

Nuts and Bolts showed up a decade after Banjo and Kazooie's platforming peak, with the bear and bird minding their own legacy instead of jumping through it. These picks follow the same arc: Crash, Donkey Kong, Sonic and Knuckles carried on into sequels, comics and a TV show long after their first platformers, still recognisable, still taking new jobs.

Games that hand you the parts and let you build the fix

Nuts and Bolts hands you a parts bin and a task, then steps back: bolt an engine to a crate, add wings when the crate has to fly, rebuild it when the crate sinks. These share that loop, from physics contraptions and tower stacking to toy cars assembled on a workbench before the race starts.

Stories where the vehicle is the main character

Banjo spends most of Nuts and Bolts in a driver's seat, so the vehicle carries the character that the platforming used to. These put machines at the centre too: taxis working a city for fares, bikes on a circuit, a snowboard down a mountain, and cartoon cars with faces and names of their own.
