Command & Conquer: Red Alert - Retaliation (1998)

Command & Conquer: Red Alert - Retaliation is a 1998 real time strategy (rts) video game made by Westwood Studios.

Alternate history where the Cold War went hot, packaged for the PlayStation. Retaliation gathers both Red Alert expansions into one console release, including the offbeat Ant missions where giant irradiated insects join the Allied and Soviet fight. You get fresh toys too: the Tesla Tank, the Shock Trooper, the Chrono Tank that blinks across the map, and a Mechanic who repairs on the move. More than a hundred skirmish maps round it out, plus a cheeky Soylent Green mode that turns ore fields into crowds of civilians.

A few thoughts on Command & Conquer: Red Alert - Retaliation

This is a repackaging of the pulpy Cold-War romp that started with Command & Conquer: Red Alert, and its soundtrack captures the same brash energy. For a modern base-builder with the same tug of war between two lopsided armies, StarCraft is the natural next campaign.

Real-time base-building warfare

Retaliation is Red Alert distilled: build your base, mass your army, and roll over the other side. These strategy landmarks run on the same current. Zerg-rush across StarCraft and its sequel, micro your heroes in Warcraft III, or economy-build your way to a medieval blitz in the Age of Empires games. Pure real-time command, mission after mission.

Turn-based strategy for the long campaign

When you want to slow the tempo and plan every move, these turn-based campaigns deliver. Build an empire across history in Civilization V and VI, siege castles town by town in Heroes of Might and Magic III, or run deliberate party tactics in Baldur's Gate III. Same strategic hunger, no frantic clicking required.
