Good Material (2023)

Good Material is a 2023 book written by Dolly Alderton.

Andy is thirty-five, a stand-up comedian whose career refuses to take off, and he has just been dumped by Jen after almost four years. He cannot work out why she stopped loving him, so he does what a certain kind of man does: he obsesses, he theorises, he crashes on friends' sofas, and he watches everyone around him quietly become an adult. Dolly Alderton's romantic comedy follows the messy months after a breakup with a comedian's ear for self-delusion, tracking dating, male friendship and the slow, unglamorous work of growing up in your thirties.

A few thoughts on Good Material

Readers should try Nick Hornby's High Fidelity for the same stalled man cataloguing his failures with painful honesty, and Dolly Alderton's own memoir Everything I Know About Love for the friendship-first flip side. Nora Ephron's essays land the wit and the heartbreak in a similar key, funny about the things that actually hurt.

Getting dumped and spending months working out why

Andy spends all of Good Material building theories about why Jen left, and Dolly Alderton lets him be wrong for months before anyone corrects him. These stories stay with the dumped party through the same stretch: the friend who has heard the theory twice, the unearned confidence of a first date, the flat nobody wants to live in alone.

Comedies where the narrator's self-delusion is the joke

Andy works as a stand-up comedian whose act lands better than his judgement, and Good Material mines the gap between the two for laughs and for damage. Each of these follows someone with the same fault: a sharp read on everyone else's behaviour, a blind spot the size of a house around their own.

Funny comics that turn sad on you

Good Material opens as a romantic comedy about a comic crashing on sofas and drifts into something closer to grief. These comics carry the same swerve, punchlines on one page and a long silence on the next. Read them for the humour, then notice how much of the story was about loneliness all along.

Dolly Alderton on screen, plus more thirties-romance reading

Good Material comes from Dolly Alderton, and it shares an address with her memoir: London, mid-thirties, friendships doing the work a relationship used to do. Start with the television version of Everything I Know About Love, then take the rest as company, romances about people still working out what adulthood is supposed to look like.
