Kingdom Hearts II (2005)

Kingdom Hearts II is a 2005 role-playing (rpg) video game made by Square Enix Product Development Division 1.

Roxas, a boy in Twilight Town with no memory of his past, spends a slow, warm prologue in a beach town before things come apart and he is drawn into a much larger conflict. Kingdom Hearts II reconnects with Sora, Donald, and Goofy as they travel between worlds drawn from Disney films, from Pirates of the Caribbean's Port Royal to the Underworld of Hercules, while an organization called XIII plots behind everything. The combat is faster and more fluid than the first game, the worlds are bigger, and the story rewards players who have followed the lore.

A few thoughts on Kingdom Hearts II

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days is a compiled film version of the Nintendo DS game covering Roxas's story in the Organization directly, making it ideal companion viewing for anyone wanting the full picture. The Kingdom hearts novel adaptation fills in additional character detail.

Heroes who have to figure out who they used to be

Kingdom Hearts II opens with Roxas living a false memory of ordinary summer days before he learns what he actually is, and Sora spends the rest of the game piecing together bonds he cannot fully recall. These picks share that same unease, characters confronting a past self, a hidden identity or a memory that does not match who they thought they were.

Small bands of misfits who become each other's family

Sora, Donald and Goofy start as a mismatched trio and end up inseparable, the kind of found family that keeps Kingdom Hearts II grounded no matter how big its multiverse gets. These picks share that same warmth, small groups of outsiders who band together against something much bigger than themselves and come out the other side as family.
