Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow (1996)

Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow is a 1996 action video game made by Game Freak.

A boy leaves his hometown of Pallet Town with a single creature and a device that logs every species he meets. Kanto opens from there: tall grass hiding wild encounters, eight Gym Leaders guarding their badges, a criminal outfit called Team Rocket to push back against, and a rival who always stays one step ahead. Red and Blue split the roster so friends must trade to complete it; Yellow puts Pikachu at your heels. Monochrome pixels, four-bit chimes, turn-based battles that reward planning over reflexes. This is the template a whole generation grew up on.

A few thoughts on Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow

The pull is the open-road adventure and the slowly growing team. One Piece chases the same feeling, a crew that widens with every island and a hero who collects loyalties as readily as raw power. For the coming-of-age journey across a wide, mapped-out world with real heart behind the spectacle, Avatar: The Last Airbender carries it beautifully from the first badge to the last.

Anime about kids who train hard to become the very best

Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow send a kid out with nothing but a starter and a partner to build into a champion, badge by badge, rival battle by rival battle. My Hero Academia, Assassination Classroom, Attack on Titan, Ranma ½ and Digimon: Digital Monsters follow the same shape, young leads who train relentlessly, spar with a rival and measure themselves battle by battle.

Long journeys across a map, gathering allies town by town

Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow structure Kanto as a string of towns to clear, each one adding a friend, a badge or a new species to the Pokédex. One Piece, Fullmetal Alchemist, Rurouni Kenshin and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles move the same way, heroes crossing a big, dangerous map who pick up companions and rivals at every stop.

Kids who become heroes one battle at a time

Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow start an ordinary ten year old with one creature and grow them into a champion who has faced down a criminal gang and eight Gym Leaders. Avatar: The Last Airbender, Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir, Kamen Rider and Stranger Things follow the same climb, ordinary kids taking on bigger threats and coming out changed, fight by fight.
