Star Wars - Legacy of the Force - Sacrifice (2007)

Star Wars - Legacy of the Force - Sacrifice is a 2007 science fiction book written by Karen Traviss and Jeff Gurner.

A galaxy barely out of one war stumbles into the next, and this time the front line runs through a single family.

The Galactic Alliance, with Cal Omas at its head and Luke Skywalker's Jedi behind it, is fighting a confederation of breakaway worlds gathered around Corellia. Han and Leia Solo have gone underground, suspected of a plot against Queen Mother Tenel Ka of the Hapes Consortium. The man hunting them runs Alliance security, and he is their son. Jacen Solo believes order is worth almost any price, front-line troops treat him as a savior, and Lumiya, the Dark Lady of the Sith, has taken an interest in his education. Luke and Mara Skywalker watch their nephew edge toward the same ground his grandfather walked.

Karen Traviss wrote this fifth installment of Legacy of the Force, the nine-book cycle Del Rey published from 2006 to 2008 with Traviss, Troy Denning and Aaron Allston alternating volumes. It sits roughly forty years after A New Hope and about eleven after the New Jedi Order saga, inside the Expanded Universe, Legends continuity rather than current canon. Those authors could age the Skywalkers and Solos into middle-aged politicians and generals, give them grown children with their own convictions, and let the argument about security and liberty turn ugly. Read it for the war rooms, the Hapan court, and a Jedi order that cannot agree about one of its own.

A few thoughts on Star Wars - Legacy of the Force - Sacrifice

Start with Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith for the template: a gifted young Jedi talks himself toward the dark side one reasonable step at a time, with a Sith mentor supplying the vocabulary. Andor is the closer match for the politics, since it lives at the level of security bureaucrats, informants and paperwork, the machinery Jacen now controls. Star Wars: The Clone Wars shows the earlier arrangement of Jedi as wartime generals and what it cost them. For the Sith side of the argument, the comic Tales of the Jedi: Dark Lords of the Sith goes back thousands of years to the same seduction told with fewer manners. Ahsoka rounds it out with a Jedi who left the order and still answers for what it became.
