The Walking Dead (2003)

The Walking Dead is a 2003 title.

Robert Kirkman's premise is simple: the zombie movie never ends. When former sheriff's deputy Rick Grimes wakes from a coma into a world overrun by the walking dead, the real horror turns out to be other survivors. Drawn in stark black and white by Tony Moore and then Charlie Adlard, the Image Comics series ran 193 issues from 2003 to 2019, following Rick and a shifting band of survivors as safety keeps curdling into fresh danger. Kirkman used the open-ended format to ask how long ordinary people can hold onto their humanity when civilization is gone.

A few thoughts on The Walking Dead

The comic's world spread across television: the flagship series The Walking Dead adapts Rick Grimes's story directly, Fear the Walking Dead rewinds to the outbreak's first days on the West Coast, and spin-offs like Dead City and Daryl Dixon strand familiar survivors in new ruins, proof that one comic can spawn a whole undead universe.

Where the comic's world keeps going on screen

Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead comic spawned a sprawling television universe that carries its survivors far past the page. These series pick up the same question of who people become when civilization falls, following old favorites and new faces across a ruined America.
