For Fans of Folk Music

Going electric at Newport in 1965 was not a betrayal. It was folk music doing exactly what folk music always does: absorbing the moment, breaking its own rules, and moving. The fans who booed were defending a museum exhibit. Dylan was building the next tradition. Every acoustic purist who came after him owes him that.

Mitchell did not just write great folk songs. She remapped what the guitar could do, invented open tunings nobody had tried, and then left folk behind entirely once she had mastered it. Blue is the peak of the confessional mode. Court and Spark is the exit. Both moves were correct. Most artists spend careers not reaching either.

Phoebe Bridgers, Adrianne Lenker, Julien Baker, Samia, the whole Asthmatic Kitty and Dead Oceans orbit: this generation is not nostalgic for folk. They use its tools (sparse instrumentation, lyrical precision, quiet dynamics) because those tools are the right ones for what they want to say. That is the oldest reason to pick up an acoustic guitar. It works.

The Coens made a film in which the folk revival is a beautiful dead end for most of its participants. Llewyn Davis is talented, self-sabotaging, and too honest for his own comfort. The film never decides if his failure is his fault or simply the shape of his luck. That refusal to resolve is exactly what the best folk songs do.
