Ella Langley Outlasted Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift's I Knew It, I Knew You, her single from Toy Story 5, arrived like the sure thing it was and took No. 1 on the Hot 100. It held for one week. Then Ella Langley's Choosin' Texas climbed back over it, and on the chart dated July 11 the song logs its twelfth week on top. The biggest name in pop, backed by a Pixar tentpole, managed seven days against a country song that has owned the summit since spring.
The interruption is the tell. Only five songs by solo female artists have spent double-digit weeks at No. 1, and Choosin' Texas is the only one from a primarily-country act. Langley already passed Debby Boone, whose 10-week run with You Light Up My Life stood as the mark for a female country artist since 1977. Yet the industry keeps filing this under novelty, a fun stat for the trades, when it is the plainest pop story of 2026: a young woman with a country song outdrew everyone, Swift included, for three months.
The skeptics have one argument worth hearing. Streaming counts differently than airplay, they say, and the weighting flatters country's repeat-play audience, so long country runs come pre-inflated. Maybe. But the formula is identical for every genre, and Swift, with a full film-soundtrack rollout behind her, played by those rules and got one week. If methodology were doing the work, Langley's grip would have loosened around week six. It tightened instead.
Elsewhere in the same chart week: Bruno Mars logged a 20th week atop Radio Songs with I Just Might, the fourth song to reach that mark since the chart began in 1990, and ATEEZ opened at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with Golden Hour : Part.5, their third US chart-topping album. Both are real feats. Neither reframes the year. Verdict: stop calling Choosin' Texas a streak and start calling it what the numbers show, the defining hit of 2026. The Swift week was a blip, and the chart said so within seven days.
