Palworld Hits 1.0, Two Years After Everyone Moved In

2 min read

Palworld reaches 1.0 on July 10, at about 12:30 in the afternoon Japan time, on every platform at once. The version number is the least interesting part. Pocketpair counts 40 million players since the January 2024 early-access debut, the one that earned the game its "Pokemon with guns" tag before most people finished the tutorial. Two and a half years on, this week's release is less a launch than a ribbon-cutting on a house 40 million people already live in.

The update itself carries real weight. The Sky Islands region opens, along with the World Tree, which has stood on the horizon since day one, visible and locked. New Pals arrive with it: a Fire Dragon, a Panda, a Sky Dragon, a Sword Eel, a Tree Guardian. The whole thing comes free, existing saves carry over, and Pocketpair holds the price steady. On paper, that is the graceful way to graduate from early access.

Then comes the asterisk. Pocketpair recommends starting a fresh save "for the full experience." Your save survives the jump, but the studio is telling its most loyal players that two and a half years of bases, breeding lines, and boss clears now sit between them and the game as intended. The advice is honest, and it stings. A free update that works best if you shelve your progress is a smaller gift than the patch notes suggest.

Verdict: take the destination, skip the ceremony. For 40 million people, Palworld launched in January 2024, and what changes on July 10 is that the game stops apologizing for itself. The Sky Islands give veterans a reason to look up and hand newcomers the best on-ramp the game has ever had, fresh save and all. The label reads 1.0 now. The players settled that question years ago.
