The Best Panel at Comic-Con Is Not the One Everyone Camps For
San Diego Comic-Con opens Wednesday night and runs through Sunday, July 26, and by Saturday evening your feed will be nothing but trailers, gasping crowd videos, and hot takes. Here is the problem with watching Comic-Con from your couch: a reveal only lands with full weight if you already know what it is revealing. A Blade Runner 2099 teaser means little if the last Blade Runner you saw was half of the 1982 original on cable. So treat this week like a fan, not a news reader. The panels are locked. The homework is short. And the panel most worth your preparation is not the one with the overnight line.
Thursday is stacked, and it starts at 10 a.m.
Hall H opens Thursday with Percy Jackson and the Olympians, where Walker Scobell and the cast preview season three, which adapts The Titan's Curse and arrives later this year. Two seasons, easy watch, and the show rewards it: this is the rare book adaptation that got better in season two. At noon, Insomniac Games takes the stage with Marvel's Wolverine, the studio's follow-up to Marvel's Spider-Man 2. If you have a PS5 and have not finished Spider-Man 2, that is your homework, and it is the most fun assignment on this list. At 1 p.m. the voice cast behind the next Avatar animated film appears, and the prep there is obvious and joyful: the 2005 Avatar: The Last Airbender series remains one of the best television shows ever made, full stop. Thursday closes with Spaceballs: The New One at 4 p.m., a sequel arriving 39 years after Mel Brooks made the definitive Star Wars parody. Watch the 1987 original; it is 96 minutes and at least 40 of them are perfect. Doctor Who fans get a fan-run Future of Doctor Who panel at the Omni that afternoon rather than an official Hall H slot, but the 2005 revival is always worth a revisit anyway.
Friday at 10 a.m. is the panel that actually matters
Here is the stance: the most important 90 minutes of this Comic-Con belong to Prime Video, Friday morning, when Blade Runner 2099 and The Rings of Power season three share a Hall H double bill. Not Marvel. Marvel's Saturday show will be the loudest, but it is a sealed mystery box; you cannot prepare for a surprise reel, you can only react to it. Friday is the opposite. Blade Runner 2099 is the first live-action Blade Runner series ever made, and its entire homework load is two films: the 1982 Blade Runner and 2017's Blade Runner 2049, both stone classics, both better on a second viewing. Watch them this week and every frame of that first footage will speak to you. Same logic for Rings of Power: rewatch The Fellowship of the Ring to remember why Middle-earth matters, then catch up on the series so season three's reveals mean something. No other panel this year offers that ratio of small homework to large payoff.
Saturday belongs to Apple, then Marvel
Saturday afternoon, Apple TV takes Hall H from 2 to 4 p.m. with a showcase that includes Silo, Dark Matter, and the new series Widow's Bay. The Silo prep is the best kind: two tense seasons of television, and if you want the deeper cut, Hugh Howey's novel Wool underneath it. Then at 5:30 p.m., Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios return to Hall H with, in Marvel's own words, an exclusive look at what is next and special guests from across the MCU. The studio has confirmed nothing about content, but the safe bet for the centerpiece is Avengers: Doomsday, and Marvel does not book Hall H on a Saturday night to show concept art. Animation fans should also note a Saturday fandom panel featuring cast and creatives from X-Men '97, the best thing the MCU era has produced on television and a two-day binge at most.
If the week is too short for all of it, run this order: the two Blade Runners first, because Friday morning comes early and that reveal rewards preparation more than any other. Spaceballs on Wednesday night, because it is short and you have earned a comedy. Then as much Silo as you can fit before Saturday afternoon. Marvel requires nothing from you except showing up. That is exactly why it is not the panel that matters most.
