Is Marvel Actually Back?

4 min read

Two things happened to Marvel in eight days, and the studio would like you to treat them as one. On July 20, the first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday went up and did 503 million views in 24 hours, the second biggest trailer launch in history. On July 31, Spider-Man: Brand New Day actually opens in theaters. One of those is a movie you can walk into and judge with your own eyes. The other is an advertisement for something five months away. Guess which one Marvel most wants you shouting about.

Start with the movie, because it is the real event. Tom Holland is back for his fourth solo outing as Peter Parker, and for the first time the director is Destin Daniel Cretton, who made the sharpest standalone origin of the last decade with Shang-Chi. The cast list is the tell that this is not business as usual: Jon Bernthal's Punisher and Mark Ruffalo's Hulk are both crossing into a street-level Spider-Man film, alongside Zendaya as MJ, Jacob Batalon as Ned, and Michael Mando's Scorpion. Brand New Day runs concurrently with Doomsday in the timeline, so this is the Multiverse Saga pulling its threads tight before December. If it lands, the whole back half of the plan feels earned. If it does not, no trailer can paper over it.

Now the trailer, and why the record deserves a shrug. 503 million views in a day is a real number, and it means almost nothing about quality. Trailers autoplay, drop worldwide at the same minute, and this one had Robert Downey Jr. unveiling his Doctor Doom and Chris Evans back in the frame, which is pure curiosity fuel. Doomsday does not arrive until December 18. You cannot judge a film you have seen two minutes of, and the last year taught fans exactly this lesson: Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts both arrived on waves of goodwill and landed in very different places. Hype is not evidence.

What to actually do this weekend

If you are seeing it opening weekend, skip the homework marathon. The only film you truly need fresh is Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Peter's story was wiped down to zero and the whole world forgot his name. That is the launchpad Brand New Day fires from. If you want the villains and the history, Homecoming and Far From Home fill in the rest. Everything else is optional. Watch the movie, form an opinion, and let the Doomsday trailer be dessert. The comeback, if it is real, will be visible in a theater, not in a view counter.
