Can Dark Matter Keep Expanding?

2 min read

Dark Matter returns Friday, August 28, with the first episode of a ten-part season that continues weekly through October 30. The long runway is exciting. It is also dangerous for a story built on limitless alternate lives.

Season one followed Jason Dessen, a physicist, professor and family man abducted into an alternate version of his life. Season two has to prove that expansion can deepen the family rather than dilute it.

Safety is already coming apart

The Dessens are apparently safe, but Jason is obsessed with the Box, the chamber that opens paths between realities. Daniela is growing more paranoid. Amanda and Ryan are trying to return home. Instead of treating survival as an ending, the season turns it into four unsettled problems.

A show built around branching realities can keep adding doors until none feels important. More possibilities do not automatically mean more suspense. Season two needs the characters' needs to determine which doors matter.

Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Connelly, Alice Braga and Jimmi Simpson return. Blake Crouch remains writer and executive producer.

Watch if season one's family anxiety mattered more to you than mastering the puzzle-box rules. Revisit season one first, then read the novel while the new episodes arrive weekly. The source and the adaptation now make a better conversation than a race.
