PAX West is designed to make restraint feel like failure. From September 4 through 7, two Seattle expo halls will compete with panels, tabletop sessions, tournaments, freeplay, concerts, and thousands of other attendees who seem to know exactly where they are going. Trying to sample all of it is the fastest way to spend four days in lines while remembering none of them. The better plan is deliberately small: choose one anchor, leave room for one surprise, and schedule one recovery stop.
Start by separating show hours from expo hours. PAX runs from 10am to midnight Friday through Sunday, then 10am to 6pm Monday. The expo halls close at 6pm every day, so demos belong in the daytime and panels or freeplay can carry the evening. If you are already in Seattle, collect your badge Thursday, September 3, from noon to 6pm at the Arch Building, TCC Tahoma Level 3. That removes one queue from Friday morning. Pickup continues from 8am to 7pm Friday through Sunday and 8am to 3pm Monday.
Your anchor is the one thing you would resent missing. Make it a specific panel, tournament, meetup, or expo appointment, then protect the hour before it from ambitious detours. Friday offers a clean example: the 11am Storytime in the Main Theatre features Riot Games' cofounder. Riot's published worlds include League of Legends and Valorant, so fans of either have an obvious first commitment. Everyone else should choose an equally firm anchor from the official schedule. One fixed point turns the convention map from a demand into a set of options.
The surprise should remain unplanned until you arrive. Give it a 60 to 90 minute block and follow whatever looks unusually busy, charming, or strange. The PAX Together stamp rally can provide just enough structure without becoming another master checklist. Pick up a card at The Intersection in Summit Building room 440, complete any three of five qualifying activities, and return with three stamps for a prize. Treat the rally as one discovery route, not three obligations. If a conversation or unexpected booth becomes the better story, abandon the card.
The recovery stop is mandatory, especially when moving between the Arch Building at 705 Pike Street and the Summit Building at 900 Pine Street. Put it on the schedule before you feel depleted. The Take This AFK Quiet Room offers a low-sensory place with gentle lighting, seating, simple activities, and volunteers. Use it between the anchor and surprise, not as emergency repair after both. Food, water, and twenty quiet minutes preserve more of a PAX day than squeezing in one extra demo.
Remote viewers need the same resistance to completionism. The official site points toward a YouTube archive described as panels from years past. It does not promise that every 2026 panel will stream live. Check official channels during the weekend, but do not build a home viewing schedule around an unconfirmed feed. Archived sessions can be a later bonus. Anything truly essential should be verified on the day.
Skipping half of PAX West is not surrender. It is how you notice the half you chose. One anchor gives the day purpose, one surprise lets the convention surprise you, and one recovery stop keeps the following day from becoming a punishment. Leave the impossible itinerary at home.
