Bigby Wolf still has the same murder to solve. The Wolf Among Us Remastered arrives next week, October 29, with rebuilt characters, fresh lighting and a black-and-white Noir Mode. Whether you need it depends on what you want from another trip to Fabletown.
This is the complete five-episode story of The Wolf Among Us, about a sheriff trying to keep order among fairy-tale characters living in New York. Newcomers can begin here. Returning players are buying another visit to the case they know, with no new chapter waiting at the end.
The director says every scene has been relit and the character models and textures rebuilt. Preserving the story and direction is the right instinct. A mystery relies on what a scene lets you notice, and what it manages to conceal. Rearranging it just to advertise the renovation would be a poor reason to return.
For a first playthrough, we would keep the colour. Look at the official club image below: the purple and cyan light does as much work as Bigby's furrowed brow. It looks like somewhere you could get a bad answer to a reasonable question. That uneasy colour is part of what makes Fabletown worth looking at.
Noir Mode is an appealing experiment for somebody who already knows these rooms. It is a stranger introduction to them. Black and white comes with a ready-made detective-film mood, but this particular world already has a look of its own.
You can switch Noir Mode on and off, so curiosity need not become a commitment. Let the colour establish the place first, then see what the alternative brings out. We are judging the presentation shown in the official images here; the remaster's performance still needs a proper launch verdict.
Existing owners have a more expensive question. Do you want to revisit the conversations and make the decisions again, or do you mainly want to find out what happens next? The remaster serves the first wish. New lighting cannot satisfy the second.
Newcomers should put this edition on their list and check the launch reviews. Returning players have no narrative reason to pay twice. If you want the reunion anyway, try answering people differently and let an awkward choice stand. Start at episode one, keep the neon on, and give Bigby's new coat a chance to get dirty.
