Alice Hoffman

Alice Hoffman has written more than thirty novels in a mode she basically invented for American fiction: domestic realism with one impossible thing in it that nobody in the book finds surprising. Practical Magic is the one everyone knows because of the film, though the book is stranger and sadder. She wrote much of it while being treated for breast cancer and has been open about that since.
