Art Spiegelman
Art Spiegelman drew Maus over thirteen years: his father's survival of Auschwitz, told with Jews as mice and Nazis as cats, and the framing story of a difficult son interviewing a difficult father. It took a special Pulitzer in 1992, the only graphic novel ever to get one, and it is the book that forced American publishing to take comics seriously. He edited Raw and drew New Yorker covers for a decade.

Where to start with Art Spiegelman
Maus is the first volume and the essential one. MetaMaus is the book about making it, including the interview tapes and the drafts, and it is genuinely illuminating rather than a cash-in. Breakdowns collects the underground comix work from the seventies, which is where the formal experiments that made Maus possible were being worked out.
