Colleen Hoover was a social worker in Texas who self-published her first novel in 2012 so her mother could read it. A decade later she had sold something over twenty million books, mostly through TikTok, and Time named her one of the hundred most influential people in the world. It Ends With Us draws on her own mother's experience of domestic violence and has been argued over extensively, including by Hoover, since the film adaptation.
