Herbie Hancock is an American pianist, composer and bandleader, born in Chicago in 1940, who played a Mozart concerto with the Chicago Symphony at eleven and studied engineering before music. He joined the Miles Davis Quintet in 1963 and helped rewrite what a jazz rhythm section does. He has changed direction more often than almost any musician of his stature: post-bop, then the electric Mwandishi band, then the funk of Head Hunters, then Rockit and turntables in 1983. He has fourteen Grammys and an Academy Award.

Where to start with Herbie Hancock
Head Hunters is the one to start with, the record that took jazz into funk and outsold everything else in the genre. Empyrean Isles is the earlier acoustic peak and the more conventional pleasure. 'Round Midnight is the film he scored and acted in, and it won him the Academy Award for its music.
