Jung Chang was a Red Guard at fourteen, then a peasant, a barefoot doctor and an electrician, before becoming the first person from the People's Republic of China to take a doctorate at a British university. Wild Swans, the story of her grandmother, her mother and herself across a century of Chinese history, has sold more than ten million copies and is banned in China. She has since written a biography of Mao Zedong with her husband Jon Halliday, and one of the Empress Dowager Cixi, both of which argue against the received account and both of which historians have contested at length.

Wild Swans is the book to read first and the reason for the other two: three generations of women told without the distance a historian would keep. Empress Dowager Cixi makes the revisionist case for a ruler usually written off as a reactionary. Big Sister, Little Sister, Red Sister takes the Soong sisters and uses them to tell the whole Republican century.
