Lillian Faderman is an author.
Lillian Faderman is the historian who made lesbian history a field with archives rather than anecdotes. She spent decades in letters, diaries and court records recovering relationships that the sources deliberately did not name, and the method matters as much as the findings. She taught English at Fresno State, retired from academia in 2007, and has written a memoir about growing up poor in Los Angeles with an immigrant mother. Three of her books have been New York Times notable books of the year.

Odd Girls and Twilight Lovers is the foundational one, a twentieth-century history of romantic friendship and lesbian life in America that basically established the field. The gay revolution is the big narrative account of the movement and the most readable of them. Naked in the promised land is the memoir and the most personal. Gay L.A. is the city history, and Chloe Plus Olivia is the literary anthology.
