Vince Gilligan's catalogue starts quietly. The Lone Gunmen in 2001, then very little until Breaking Bad arrived in 2008 and rearranged what a drama series was permitted to do with its own protagonist. The mechanism was not shock, whatever the reputation says. It was consequence: what a character did in one episode cost him something three episodes later, reliably, and almost nothing else on television at the time was bothering to keep that ledger.
Better Call Saul, from 2015 to 2022, is the harder trick. A prequel built around a supporting comic character had every reason to be a cash-in, and instead it turned into a slower, sadder and far better-photographed show than the one that produced it, assembled almost entirely out of watching a man talk himself into things he cannot undo. Across the two series Gilligan has collected four Primetime Emmy Awards, six Writers Guild of America Awards, two Critics' Choice Television Awards, two Producers Guild Awards, a Directors Guild Award and a BAFTA Television Award.
The rest is a short list. Battle Creek in 2015 is the network series nobody talks about. El Camino in 2019 is a feature-length coda to Breaking Bad. Pluribus arrived in 2025 as the first thing he has made since Better Call Saul finished, which makes it the most genuinely interesting item on his slate, because it is the first in nearly twenty years that is not answerable to Albuquerque.

Where to start with Vince Gilligan
Start with Breaking Bad, and give it the first two seasons before deciding anything. The show is often remembered for its later fireworks, but the early run is where Gilligan establishes the rule that everything costs, and the rest only lands because that rule was set carefully.
Then Better Call Saul, which is the better-made show and the more patient one. If you watch it second the small ironies land properly; if you watch it first you get a legal drama of unusual quality and no idea why the lighting keeps warning you. El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie is an epilogue for people who wanted one, agreeable rather than essential. Pluribus from 2025 is the current work and the place to see whether the method transplants. Battle Creek and The Lone Gunmen are for completists, and No Half Measures: Creating the Final Season of Breaking Bad is the making-of if you want the process rather than the product.
